  • 8th MaSC Workshop and Meeting
A two-day workshop held at the HERCULES Lab on the practical applications of gas chromatographic analysis using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and pyrolysis for samples from cultural heritage objects, consisting of lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions. A third workshop day describes the use of AMDIS and ESCAPE for interpreting GCMS data. ESCAPE (Expert System for Characterization using AMDIS Plus Excel) was developed in the Getty Conservation Institute’s lacquer research project to systematize identification of compounds and relate them to specific artists’ materials present, and to standardize the presentation of py-GC-MS results. The meeting will be held at the University of Évora and will comprise discussions and presentations on novel applications of chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques to the study of art and cultural artefacts.

  • 9th MaSC Workshop and Meeting, Ottawa Canada
The 9th Workshop and Meeting of the Users’ Group for Mass Spectrometry and Chromatography (MaSC) took place in Ottawa, Canada, from Monday 3rd – Friday 7th June 2019. The workshop, hosted jointly by the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) and Parks Canada, will take place on 3-5 June. The meeting will be held at the National Gallery of Canada on 6-7 June. The two-and-a-half-day workshopprovided a unique opportunity for participants to experience several novel sample preparation and derivatization methods for diverse GCMS applications: pyrolysis of natural resins, dye analysis, and evolved gas analysis for the evaluation of museum exhibition and storage materials. The use of the Thermal Separation Probe (TSP) for thermal desorption and “slow pyrolysis”, performed directly in the GC inlet, will be introduced. Workshops will be conducted by Jennifer Poulin (CCI) and Greg Smith (Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields). The workshop sessions included lectures, demonstrations and hands-on training on the instrumentation using samples prepared by the instructors. The meetingheld at the National Gallery of Canada (6th-7th June, 2019) and comprised discussions and presentations on novel applications of chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques to the study of art and cultural artefacts.

  • AiA Authentication in Art 2016 Award
Authentication in Art award was presented to Laura Hendriks and her PhD project Microscale radiocarbon dating based at the Ion Beam Physics Group of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) under supervision of Dr Irka Hajdas and in collaboration with Prof. Ester Ferreira at TH Köln and Markus Küffner at SIK-ISEA, Zürich. This project aims to; on the one hand, minimize the sample size and therefore the invasiveness of radiocarbon dating analysis and on the other hand to expand the application of the method to pigments and organic binders.
