  • Coming Clean
The Coming Clean project is about decision-making processes in conservation and the factors that affect them, from public perception, to cultural background, educational background and context. The 3-year project funded by UCL Qatar is a partnership between UCL Qatar, UCL’s Institute of Archaeology, the National Trust, Cologne University of Applied Sciences and the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar. Coming Clean adopts a holistic approach to a common step in conservation which is an irreversible intervention. We investigate how different ideas, people, contexts, education as well as institutional guidelines and ethical codes influence conservation practice and whether these meet the aesthetic expectations of the public. The factors are examined across the discipline. The project aims to explore the relationships between ethical, philosophical, aesthetic, cultural and material issues and their implications on objects and monuments. Coming Clean follows a methodology of discovery and observation though literature surveys, analysis of treatment records and public perception surveys.

Eleven other churches included in the World Monuments Watch were visited and inspected. This report describes the condition of the building and its interior wall paintings and makes recommendations for repairs and future work. It includes measured drawings, restoration specifications, and materials analyses.

Practical Information Leaflet

  • Production of wall painting conservation documents
Heritage, Adrian and Robert Gowing, 2002, Hg.: English Heritage
There is an increasing awareness and demand within the conservation field for the production of conservation proposals and reports as essential components of any project. Beyond their primary roles as defined by the client, these documents may also be required for applications for Faculties or Listed Building Consent, for grant applications, tenders for conservation work, as records for longer-term conservation management and maintenance, and as historical archives. This Practical Information Leaflet is intended as a guide for the organisation and production of proposals and reports required for wall painting conservation. Within this leaflet, English Heritage aims both to simplify and to clarify the contents and structure of wall painting conservation documents. The material presented is deliberately intended to encourage substance over style or gloss, and should aid in the generation of clear and consistent reports which can be effective and useful to conservators, owners, clients, regulatory authorities and funding bodies. English Heritage has prepared this leaflet as the first of a series of practical guides, aimed at clarifying different aspects of the conservation process and improving standards conservation.

  • Temporary protection of wall paintings during building works
Heritage, Adrian and Robert Gowing, 2002, Hg.: English Heritage

English Heritage has prepared this leaflet as one of a series of practical guides, aimed at clarifying different aspects of the conservation process and improving standards within the practice of wall painting conservation.
