Virtual Network Meeting for Doctoral Coaching 2020

To start the new coaching year of the collegial coaching program, doctoral candidates, coaches and university representatives came together for a virtual network meeting on September 15, 2020.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Becker, the Vice President for Research and Knowledge Transfer, Petra Liedtke from the Central Equal Opportunities Officer and Dr. Birgit Szczyrba, the Head of University Didactics at the Center for Teaching Development, welcomed the participants in the virtual meeting.

It was followed by an lecture by Dr. Christian Dumpitak, who, as speaker for the advisory board and member of the University Association for the Qualification of Young Scientists in Germany (UniWiND), contributed to the development of a competence model for young scientists with a speech titled "Consciously Taking Competence and Career Development into Your Own Hands: Possible Applications of the UniWiND Competence Model for Young Scientists".

Afterwards there was an exchange in small groups before the topic “Competence development during the doctorate” was taken up again in plenary. At the end of the event, the new coaching groups had the opportunity to get to know each other and to exchange some ideas with their respective coaches about current issues and expectations of the program.

The Coaching Program for Female Doctoral Researchers was established in 2016 as a cooperation between the Equal Opportunities Office, the Center for Teaching Development and Graduate Center, in order to facilitate equal opportunities. In 2018 the Coaching Program for Male Doctoral Researchers started. In the current 5th and 3rd year of the programs, 24 female and 11 male doctoral candidates from TH Köln take part in the coaching programs.

The doctoral researchers come together three times a year in coaching workshops in small groups with a maximum 10 people to discuss challenges and progress in their doctorate. They are lead by two experienced coaches Dr. Antje Schultheis and Dr. Christian Dumpitak. An English-speaking group has been set up for international doctoral researchers. In addition, the program includes supervised portfolio to support self and project management.
