Abstract: In this talk Muhammad Elhossary will present his research project InteractOA. The most common way to store research findings are scientific articles. For specific areas, pieces of knowledge are extracted and compiled in databases to enable to search, visualize and browser them. In most cases, the exact source of knowledge items is lost in
this process. That mean it is not (or at least not easily) possible to find the exact statement in the scientific article that supports the database entry.
To address this problem we developed a solution for a small use case from molecular microbiology, namely the representation of interactions of small, regulatory RNAs (sRNAs) and their target messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in bacterial. While this is a rather small and defined application, the concept could be transferred to several scientific domains. For this project called "InteractOA" we modelled the regulatory interactions in the semantic, collaborative, open database "Wikidata" and constructed a web interface for querying and visualizing them. To connect them to their source in the scientific literature we introduced high resolution referencing to the sentence level inside open access articles in PubMed Central. By this we could generate a maintainable solution to connect stored pieces of knowledge with their sources. InteractOA encourage researchers to contribute, save, and curate similar findings.
