Pension policy is currently at the centre of economic and social policy debates: efforts to stabilise benefit levels, rising fiscal pressures, and the introduction of capital-market–oriented elements such as the Altersvorsorgedepot signal a potential shift in the system. This raises a central question: What is the future of the German pension system?
At this symposium, Dr. Florian Blank (Hans-Böckler-Stiftung) analyzes the historical development and current state of the public pension system in Germany as well as ongoing reform trajectories. Prof. Arjan Premti, PhD, and Prof. Mohammad Jafarinejad, PhD (University of Wisconsin–Whitewater) provide a concise perspective on the U.S. system of funded retirement provisions and offer insights into the outcome of the first generation of retirees who have relied primarily on defined-contribution plans.
