Sustainable menthol from a by-product of the paper industry

Paper production generates significant quantities of turpentine oil, which until now has mainly been burned for energy. A research project at TH Köln has now developed a new synthesis method that can be used to obtain menthol for the pharmaceutical, food and cosmetics industries. In the long term, this could replace the petroleum-based synthetic menthol that has been used until now. More
