Cologne, Sep 15 – On today’s International Day of Democracy, the importance of free, just, and participatory social structures is taking center stage around the world. For the Faculty of Spatial Development and Infrastructure Systems at TH Köln, this day is more than just a symbol: it underscores the core of its educational mission in the spirit of global citizenship.

Whether it’s equitable access to clean water, fair land and resource rights, the decentralization of energy systems, or citizen participation in land-use planning—the global challenges of our time are closely intertwined with fundamental democratic principles.

On the occasion of this commemorative day, the dean of the faculty, Prof. Dr. Sabine Schlüter, emphasizes: “The International Day of Democracy is a reminder to value the democratic achievements worldwide. Our study programs contribute to strengthening empowerment and participation in natural resources management and preparing for the responsibilities related to democratic rights.”

In the faculty’s bachelor’s and master’s programs, students not only learn technical and economic fundamentals, but also how to facilitate complex negotiation processes, represent interests, and develop sustainable solutions on an equal footing. This education equips them to take on responsibility as future experts and to strengthen civic engagement both globally and locally.
