From Theory to Practice: International Business Students Explore Cross-Dock Logistics at Schnug
On 27 May 2026, 21 students from the Bachelor's programme International Business at TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences visited the recently opened Schnug Logistic Group's Distribution Center in Dormagen, a dedicated cross-dock facility serving the Covestro Group.
The undergraduates were warmly welcomed with snack and refreshments by Christoph Zimmermann, Crossdock Manager at Covestro Deutschland AG, who had served as the main contact in planning the visit before. Dr. Maximilian Leven, Managing Director of Schnug Logistic Group, introduced the Schnug company and the Dormagen site. Students gained valuable insights into the role of logistics service providers and the importance of efficient distribution processes within modern supply chains in the chemical industry.
A guided tour of the cross-dock facility then allowed participants to experience logistics operations first-hand. Observing the flow of chemicals and dangerous goods requiring special handling in the warehouse helped students connect concepts from the classroom with real-world supply chain management practices. The visit concluded with a presentation by Christoph Zimmermann sharing practical perspectives on logistics risk management and how companies address challenges in increasingly complex supply chains. As TH Köln, such excursions are an important part of our educational approach, enabling students to engage directly with industry experts and gain practical insights beyond the classroom.
We would like to sincerely thank the Covestro Deutschland AG, especially Christoph Zimmermann, Stephan Fuß (Global SC&L Performance Management) and Frank Mörke (Team Lead Logistics Operations Packed Goods), for establishing the connection with Schnug Logistic Group and making this excursion possible. Our thanks also go to Dr. Maximilian Leven, and the entire team at Schnug Logistic Group for their kind hospitality and for providing our students with an enriching learning experience. We look forward to continuing this valuable collaboration between academia and industry and happily invite the practitioners to visit us in the coming semesters on site at the Campus Südstadt.
