International Activities

Globalisation and changes due to global movements, threads, and politics increasingly impact economies. Therefore, Schmalenbach School of Business and Economics aims to increase international activities to increase research relevance and students' employability. International experiences for students and international networks for researchers are a strategic target.

International Degrees

Our international degrees help students to cope with global challenges. They learn to find innovative and sustainable solutions to complex problems in international settings. Our bachelor degree International Business B.Sc. our master degree International Business M.A., and our interdisciplinary Double-Degree International Management and Intercultural Communication M.A. / MBA are lectured in English and include mandatory semesters abroad. The bachelor degree can even be extended with a work experience abroad calculated towards the final degree (one additional semester).

In addition we offer Master in Insurance Law in collaboration with the University of Limerick. The language of instruction for the Insurance Law (Master) is German.

Student Exchange

More than 150 students of our faculty study abroad every year while we are host to more than 100 students of our partner universities annualy. In order to achieve this exchange ratio, the faculty has more than 60 partner universities. We partner with faculties of business, management or economics. Some partner universities might also offer lectures for insurance management or law. We usually do not accept free movers, for more information on the matter, please contact the Department of International Affairs (https://www.th-koeln.de/en/international_office/global--freemover_71597.php).

If you are a (potential exchange) student at Schmalenbach School of Business and Economics, please contact Christina Linnemann (for all countries) or Andrea Droste (especially for spanish speaking countries).

If you are a student (potential exchange) at the Institute of Insurance Studies, please check Internationalisation for information for incomings and outgoings.

Short Courses & Summer Schools

Short-term programs enable students to gain intensive experience in one or more countries. The mixture of academic achievements, cultural program and, if necessary, visits to companies on site is an important component.

Summer School GETEUROPEAN

The GETEUROPEAN summer school “Global and European Trade and European Business Environment” provides you with in-depth insights into the European economy and its relation with the rest of the world. It also offers an excellent opportunity to gain new academic insight, rewarded with 6 US-credits (12 ECTS), first-hand exposure to the European business environment and European culture, cross-cultural and academic interaction with Cologne students and faculty. More information is available here.

Winter School with students from Australia

At Schmalenbach School of Business and Economics, there is a winter school where students from Australia are taught for two weeks on the Südstadt campus. Participation by students of Schmalenbach School of Business and Economics is possible under certain conditions. More information will be available on ILU.

Summer School China and Summer School Russia

For the students of the Schmalenbach School of Business and Economics, there are two four-week summer schools. One is in China (Dalian) and one is in Russia (Nizhny Novgorod and Rostov-on-Don) every year. In both cases, the students are in the country for around four weeks and learn intercultural skills and specialist content in lectures, company visits or in contact with the students on site. More information will be available on ILU for students interested.

Short-term program with Limerick

The module "English Insurance Law" includes a three-week study visit to Limerick (Republic of Ireland). This program is organized exclusively for students of the Insurance Law degree (part-time master’s).

Visiting Lecturers and Researchers

We support the exchange of lecturers, especially with lecturers from partner universities. Lecturers and researchers from other institutions can also be supported.

In the past there have been exchanges with Russia, China, South Korea, India and the USA, among others.
