FacING Digitalization: Innovative and Contemporary Education in Engineering Sciences

Invitation FacING Digitalization (Image: Faculty of Process Engineering, Energy ans Mechanical Systems/ TH Köln)

From 17 to 20 May 2021, the Online Conference "FacING Digitalization: Innovative and Contemporary Education in Engineering" will be held over three days as part of the project "Curriculum 4.0.NRW: Digital Engineering - Competence Acquisition for Mechanical Engineers in the Digital Age" at the Faculty of Process Engineering, Energy and Mechanical Systems of TH Köln.

3 days, 3 hours, 3 topics:

  •  AR/VR/MR and Technologies in Engineering Education

  •  Accompanying Digital Learning Processes

  •  Learning Analytics & eAssessment

The "FacING Digitalization" Conference provides a platform to present and discuss new approaches to innovative and contemporary education in engineering. It offers faculty members, teachers, researchers and students as well as practice partners and guests from other faculties and universities the opportunity to exchange ideas with invited international and national experts on "good teaching", current research issues and megatrends.

The lectures will be dedicated to the following main topics:

Day 1 - Mon, May 17, 2021 3:00 PM - 06:00 PM (CET) (Event language English)

AR/VR/MR and Technologies in Engineering Education

In the course of the fourth industrial revolution, which leads to an increased merging of digital environments and the real world, learning environments in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) are already becoming more and more important in the education of engineers.  Since at the same time the necessary software and hardware components for AR/VR applications are becoming increasingly affordable, these technologies are gaining importance in teaching and offer an opportunity for competency-based, hands-on and experiential learning. The track addresses the opportunities and challenges of AR/VR/MR applications in the teaching of engineering courses and shows successful examples of the meaningful use of these technologies.

Speaker: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dominik May,University of Georgia, Athens, USA    I    Prof. David Claveau, Whittier College, California, USA

Day 2 - Tue, May 18, 2021 3:00 PM - 06:00 PM (CET) (Event language German)

Accompanying digital learning processes

Competency-based teaching/learning settings rely on systematic and process-oriented feedback to enable students to ascertain their learning status and teachers to steer learning processes. Because reflection and feedback processes are time- and staff-intensive, scaling them for large groups is challenging. This track addresses how digital media and AI-based technologies can help make feedback more individualized, systematic, and process-oriented, while enabling low-threshold, automated feedback and encouraging self-coaching processes in preparation for face-to-face conversations.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Isa Jahnke, University of Missouri, Columbia, USA   I    Dr. Cäcilie Kowald, time4you GmbH

Day 3 - Thu, May 20, 2021 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM (CET) (Event language German)

Learning Analytics & eAssessment

Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data in the context of teaching and learning can provide new insights for teachers and learners to make teaching and learning processes more optimized and individualized, and to promote the development of competencies. The use of digital tools for computer-based formative and summative assessments can increase the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of assessment processes in a resource-efficient manner. The track addresses how teaching, learning, and testing can be measured digitally, what insights can be gained, and how to use them to optimize teaching and learning scenarios.

Speaker: Prof. Dr. Beate Rhein Fakultät für Informations,- Medien- und Elektrotechnik, TH Köln    I    Prof. Dr. Martin Bonnet, Institut für Werkstoffanwendung (IWA), Anlagen, Energie- und Maschinensysteme, TH Köln
