Research fields

  • Energy Efficiency Focus: not only energetic efficiency, but also ressource efficiency and sustainable electronics for renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency
  • P4ELECS
Teaching material for the electrification challenges ahead, within a European consortium, my part will be jupyter notebooks for systems engineering in energy efficiency.
  • digital fellowship sustainability in higher ed enawemi
With their teaching concept "simple sustainable tools for MINT fundamentals" Prof. Johanna Friederike May (Institute of Electrical Power Engineering) and Prof. Beate Rhein (Institute of Communications Engineering) provide for a more sustainable use of computers. In MINT subjects specialized software is needed, e.g. numerical mathematical programs. Therefore, many students buy new computers, but not all students can afford that. This issue increases inequality between students and buying new computers leads to a higher energy and resource consumption. May and Rhein want to integrate openly accessible web tools into their teaching that can work on all computers. The project collects existing web based programs, generates helpful examples for those who teach in higher ed and develops exercises that use sustainability examples.

  • livinglab.nrw project ZEnsys
This research project compares the solar decathlon houses of the sde21 competition in Wuppertal with regard to reliability of electrical energy technology in sustainable housing in order to find circularity potentials.
  • ALepa OERcontent.nrw
In order to offer more and better exercises to students in fundamentals of physics and electrical engineering, the project ALepa intends unifying collections of exercises from 6 universities. Lead by FH Dortmund, Prof. Dr. Johanna Friederike May (faculty of information, media and electrical engineering at TH Köln) collaborates with university teachers at Hochschule Hamm-Lippstadt, FH Aachen, RWTH Aachen and Ruhr-Universität Bochum. The project partners want to create statistically validated exercise pools categorized by content and difficulty along with instructions for learners.
