Technical Acoustics
The research activities address topics of spatial hearing as well as the measurement and auralization of spatial sound fields. In several research projects, methods of digital audio signal processing are developed and evaluated and assessed by means of psychoacoustic investigations. The focus is currently on the measurement of room acoustics, on the audibility of simulated and measured rooms, and on the application of the relevant signal processing and psychoacoustic methods. The students are involved in research activities in the context of their bachelor's and master's theses and already deal with relevant scientific questions in the lectures and practical courses.
As part of lectures and practical courses, technical acoustics at the TH Köln covers a wide range of acoustic topics. Students acquire basic knowledge in the areas of excitation and propagation of sound as well as acoustic transduction and measurement of sound. Building on this, topics such as room acoustics, building acoustics and sound insulation are covered. Furthermore, the structure of the auditory system and sound perception are also covered. According to the field of study and interest, students also acquire knowledge in the areas of audio signal processing and audio coding.
