Requirements for participation
- You are an international student at TH Köln. (This workshop is primarily aimed at international degree-seeking students from German and English-speaking STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), but it is also open to international students from other disciplines.)
- You are prepared to actively engage in all class activities.
- If you are enrolled in a degree program taught in German: Your English language skills are at level B2, proven by SLZ placement test (taken within the last two semesters) or by submission of a certificate (not older than two years).
- You have the necessary technical equipment to participate in the workshop: PC/laptop with camera and microphone, stable internet connection, valid campusID.
This workshop is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Intended Learning Outcomes
After completion of the workshop participants can
- apply rhetorical techniques to formulate well-structured, convincing arguments,
- express themselves appropriately in different situations,
- adapt their communication to their target audience to enhance the effectiveness of their communication.
Content
This one-day interactive workshop will provide you with opportunities to enhance your oral English language skills in both professional and academic contexts. We will focus on improving your discourse management strategies so that you can effectively take part in discussions, use rhetorical devices to build convincing arguments and navigate cross-cultural communication. Emphasis will be placed on finding the correct tone, striking a balance between directness and politeness in spoken English. Through simulations, discussions and interactive games, you will master clear, audience-adapted communication, especially when discussing complex ideas across disciplines. Your active participation and reflection throughout the day will boost your confidence and enhance your persuasive power in English.
