Requirements for participation
- You are an international student at TH Köln. (This workshop is primarily aimed at international degree-seeking students from German and English-speaking STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), but it is also open to international students from other disciplines.)
- You are prepared to actively engage in all class activities.
- If you are enrolled in a degree program taught in German: Your English language skills are at level B2, proven by SLZ placement test (taken within the last two semesters) or by submission of a certificate (not older than two years).
- You have the necessary technical equipment to participate in the workshop: PC/laptop with camera and microphone, stable internet connection, valid campusID.
This workshop is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Intended Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the workshop participants will be able to
- develop their own research topics;
- organize their time in the research and writing phases;
- use citation management programs to organize their research literature and notes;
- reference relevant literature;
- apply useful methods for outlining, drafting, and revising their texts;
- write introductions and conclusions for academic texts;
- write abstracts for theses.
Content
This workshop addresses the unique challenges that arise from long-term writing projects like advanced term papers and theses, and provides participants with the tools they need to tackle these challenges. We'll discuss narrowing a topic, developing a research question, finding and managing research literature, effective note-taking practices, time management, citation and referencing, the structure of term papers and theses, and writing and revision strategies.
Throughout the workshop, participants will work with authentic student writing and have the opportunity to work on their own writing projects.
