Celebrating 50 years of the National Water Research Center (NWRC) - Prof. Dr. Lars Ribbe delivered an inspiring talk titled “Water Knows No Borders: How Historical Partnerships Can Inspire Innovative Solutions” as part of the session “Innovating for Resilience: NWRC’s Legacy and Future in Water Resources Management”, marking five decades of pioneering research and impact (1975-2025).

Prof. Dr. Lars Ribbe highlighted the iWater Project, showcasing the powerful scientific collaboration between Germany and Egypt in strengthening water security, innovation, and sustainable development.

The session gathered distinguished leaders, including H.E. the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, H.E. the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and representatives from major international organizations – all underscoring the crucial role of science-based partnerships in building resilience against climate change.

The iWater Project continues to serve as a bridge for transdisciplinary cooperation and knowledge exchange, inspiring joint action toward a more water-secure future.

Further Highlights of the Cairo Water Week 2025

  • The session “iWater: The Role of Transdisciplinary IWRM in Enhancing Climate Resilience and Water Sustainability” set the stage for dynamic discussions on strengthening German–Egyptian partnerships in integrated water resources management and capacity building.
  • The session “Empowering the Next Generation: Science-Based Collaboration and Capacity Building in the Nile Basin” spotlighted education and youth empowerment as crucial pillars of sustainable water governance across the region.
  • Dr. Saher Ayyad presented “Unlocking the Potential for Improved Irrigation Efficiency in Egypt” in the session “Modern Irrigation for a Changing World”, contributing to ongoing dialogues on advancing irrigation efficiency and resilience in the MENA region.
  • In addition, Dr. Saher Ayyad participated in the technical session “Imporving Water Productivity with WaPOR: From Data to Action” organized by FAO and Wageningen University, to showcase how the open-access WaPOR portal uses remote sensing to help Egypt produce more food with less water, promoting sustainable agriculture and smarter water use.

This year’s Cairo Water Week reinforced TH Köln’s commitment to fostering science-based solutions, international collaboration, and capacity development for a more water-secure and sustainable future.
