  • Destroy Media! Humour as a Strategy in the Arts. The Rebellion of Images against Technology
Do we really want to destroy media? That's certainly not the point. Without technical aids, from the pencil to the VR cave, no images could be created. However, today’s image technology strives to suppress the diversity of representational possibilities; it standardises styles and motifs. Effects of illusion and immersion can be designed to be near perfection as a result of computer-generated imagery (CGI). However, do we really want to retreat into such illusory worlds? Opposing tendencies can be seen in art and design today: especially in the field of narrative images‚ from drawing to animation, illustration to comics and cartoons, as well as from augmented to virtual reality (AR/VR). Such visual practices demonstrate a conscious adherence to graphic-drawing imagery or even amateurish craftsmanship, from ballpoint pen doodles to handcrafted figures in stop-motion films.
