Gender competence in teaching and studies

The university-wide project “Gender as action competence and transdisciplinary analysis perspective – social innovation in teaching and studies” or “Gender competence in teaching and studies” for short began in March 2020 and is set to continue until 2024. The project aims to permanently embed gender as an action competence and transdisciplinary analysis perspective in all faculties of TH Köln.

The project consists of two modules:

1.    Advice and support provided to teaching staff at all faculties of TH Köln for the competence-oriented enhancement of degree programs and lectures by including findings and analysis perspectives from transdisciplinary gender research.

2.   Gradual expansion of a gender competence certificate as an additional qualification for students of all twelve faculties of TH Köln – students at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences can already obtain the gender competence certificate, which was developed in the preceding model project.

Social innovation through gender competence

As today’s world is becoming increasingly dynamic, there is a growing need and importance to design change processes in society, business, and technology in a socially responsible manner. Gender competence is a crucial aspect of this design process. As a university we are educating the graduates of tomorrow. With the gender competence certificate our students acquire knowledge of the relevance of gender at various levels – both subject-related and interdisciplinary, from a societal, interactive, and individual point of view. They strengthen their reflection skills and learn how to act in a gender-sensitive and gender-responsive manner.
The project supports our teaching staff to enable them to help our students develop gender competence in their respective degree courses. This includes various offers such as subject-related consulting, qualification, and team teaching. Take a look at our website for teachers to find our latest offers and information.
As an equality promoting measure, the project is supported with funds from the Program for Women Professors III, an initiative of the German federal government and states. Sonja Gaedicke is the Project Coordinator and Dr. Barbara Umrath the Project Manager, with Prof. Dr. Renate Kosuch acting as Co-Manager.
