Laboratory for Leightweight Body Design

The research and teaching content of the laboratory is the CAD- and FEM-based development of lightweight body structures. The body components are developed and manufactured within the scope of motor sports projects and vehicle restoration.

Main research areas

Auto_1 (Image: TH Köln)

The research focus of the laboratory is the structural lightweight design of car bodies, which includes the development of new lightweight design concepts for body components as well as for small series and motor sport applications.

Materials include light metals, high-strength steels and fibre composites.

R&D Service

The Laboratory for Body Lightweight Design offers the following R&D services for third parties, if capacities are available:

  • Design and development of lightweight design concepts for body support structures and components
  • To a limited extent, the creation of prototypes and component tests are possible.
