Registration - Flood and High Water - How Can We Protect Our Cities?

Cities are facing a new reality: floods are becoming more frequent, more intense and less predictable. Heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems within minutes, rivers burst their banks, and sealed surfaces leave water nowhere to go. The consequences are severe – damaged homes and infrastructure, disrupted economies and, at worst, lost lives.

Yet flooding is not fate. With smart urban planning, nature-based solutions such as green roofs and retention areas, resilient infrastructure and well-prepared communities, cities can reduce their risk. In this workshop, we will explore how urban flood protection works, learn from successful examples and develop ideas for safer, more resilient cities, thus directly supporting Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting safer, more inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable urban environments.

This PIONEER workshop brings together practitioners from across Europe to explore how innovations from research can be transferred into real-world applications. The focus is on practical tools, cooperation models, success stories, and methods. Participants will gain insights into current research, projects and challenges of partners across Europe.

The workshop will take place on Monday, November 30, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. CET
