Around the world in 16 fellows: Dr. María Carmen Bachiller Martín

This year and next, sixteen researchers from thirteen countries will be conducting their research and teaching at TH Köln as International Fellows. One of them is María Carmen Bachiller Martín. In this interview, she reveals what she likes about the TH Köln premises, which unexpected projects have been conceived and what she has been up to in Cologne.
Name: Dr. María Carmen Bachiller Martín
Home university: Universitat Politècnica de València
Hosting faculty at TH Köln: Faculty of Information, Media and Electrical Engineering
Fellowship name: Study of High-Frequency Electromagnetic Characteristics of Polymeric Materials and Metallized Polymers for 3D Printing
Duration of stay: 1 October – 31 December 2024, 1 July – 31 August 2025
I was interested in the International Fellowship because…
it is an opportunity to work in an environment different from my own. Moreover, I have been working with the High-Frequency Laboratory at THK since 2017. The International Fellowship was a way to strengthen our ties and embark on new projects.
Specifically, during the fellowship I plan to…
focus on the original project, which was the high-frequency electromagnetic characterization of polymeric materials and metallized polymers in 3D printing. However, a very interesting line of work has also emerged in collaboration with the Department of Restoration and Conservation, concerning the preservation of technological heritage equipment.
During my time in Germany, I would like to find out…
opportunities for new projects both in the development of high-frequency devices and in the preservation of technological heritage. In addition, to gain a deeper understanding of the culture, history, cuisine, and traditions of this region.
I think international exchange is…
a great opportunity to learn a different way of working, gain access to scientific and technical knowledge, and establish long-term professional and friendly relationships.
Something that is different at my home university than at TH Köln is…
the classrooms: I really like the classrooms at THK because they have facilities that are very interesting, such as the small laboratory area or the sliding whiteboards. There's also a strong focus on experimentation, with large laboratories equipped with all kinds of equipment and facilities
What I take back to my home university is…
that I have made stronger ties with the high-frequency laboratory, with new long-term projects in different fields, I am gaining an understanding of a work approach that is highly focused on experimentation, and I have fond memories of the stay.
What I like about TH Köln is…
that it is a collaborative and study environment without pressure, where everything necessary for researchers' development is made available to them.
What I really want to see/experience in Cologne is...
uhm well, this is my 6th visit to Cologne, I would not say that I have experienced everything, but I have already been in the Carnival.
About PLan_CV
The International Fellows program is part of the project PLan_CV („Professur-Laufbahn an Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften neu denken: Collaboration und Vernetzung“). Its goal: Finding excellent candidates for professorial careers at TH Köln and achieving greater permeability between the academic world and the business sector. The project’s budget of 12.4 million Euros is funded through the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space program “FH-Personal” (staff for universities of applied sciences).
