Multilingual Communication (Bachelor's program) – For AEL Incoming Exchange Students

Welcome to TH Köln! We are delighted you're about to begin your year abroad at our institute. Because we know how difficult making preparations for a foreign study year can be, we'd like to offer a little help.

Studying at the ITMK in Cologne

As TH Köln's Department of International Affairs (RIA) is responsible for registration and enrollment of all exchange students at our university, they provide a website with highly useful information. Please do not miss it! You will find the link to their website under Orientation (see "Exchange Students"). There you can also download our university's booklet "Getting Started" with basic information for all new THK students. We suggest you to read it carefully as it provides general information about the organization of studies at THK. Furthermore, you will find the link our RIA´s webpage "Getting Started at TH Köln" where helpful video tutorials are provided.

Also please take a note of the Academic Calendar for AEL incoming students as it provides all key dates of your study year with us.

We hope to whet your appetite for your stay in Cologne with this information ;-)

Your Study Program at the ITMK

You will find general information on the BA program and our lecture directory under Study Plans and Lecture Timetable. You can also download a manual how to use our online platform UnivIS to create your time table. You will be sent a special course list for AEL incoming students by email from which you can compile your individual study program.

Please NOTE - Regarding LEARNING AGREEMENT: By June 1st you should have created your Learning Agreement - Before the Mobility (BTM) and uploaded it on Mobility Online. The BTM shows your provisional study program/course selection agreed with your home university and us, your host university. Please enter the respective German course titles only (NEITHER the English NOR the module titles!) in the Learning Agreement. Further information will be given to you in due time by email.

Please also note: Before the lectures start you will have to register for the classes you want to attend during the upcoming term. But don't worry: We will hold a special preparatory meeting via zoom in August to give you advice and help you to create your study plans. Later, i.e. the week before lectures start, you will attend an orientation week together with other ITMK's freshmen. You will then be given tips and information on the everyday study life at our university. And you will get to know other ITMK students.

We hope these documents will help you to prepare your studies at our university and answer your most important questions beforehand.

And we hope you enjoy reading it!

Enrollment - Arrival Recommendation - Program Start 2023

Enrollment: Before you travel to Cologne you will be asked to enroll online on the plattform Mobility Online (MobO) provided by TH Köln's Department for International Affairs (RIA). For further information please go to the respective website link on the right under Enrollment and Re-registration. Please note: At TH Köln you will study at Campus Südstadt (Ubierring 48 building). You will enroll at Faculty 03 (Fakultät für Informations- und Kommunikationswissenschaften), i.e. at the Institut für Translation und Mehrsprachige Kommunikation in the BA course of study "Multilingual Communication" with the specialisation AEL/CII.

To help you with the online enrollment procedure our RIA offers online information sessions via Zoom for incoming students. The dates will be announced by the RIA itself in good time. After registering online, you can download your THK admission letter (Zulassungsschreiben) from Mobility Online. To finalize your enrollment you will have to transfer the so called "Semesterbeitrag" (bank detailes to be communicated by the RIA). Afterwards, you will get your THK student ID (Matrikelnummer) as well as your individual CampusID which allows you to use THK's online services. Good to know: With your CampusID you will also have access to THK's e-learning platform ILU-ILIAS.

Once you have arrived in Cologne you should pick up your MultiCa at the RIA. Having done so, you can activate the Semester Ticket on your MultiCa to use public transport (busses, trams and train) for free.

Please note: Should you have any questions regarding your enrollment or registration on MobO, please contact TH Köln's RIA directly. For contact details and office hours please click here.

Arrival Recommendation: We recommend you to arrive in Cologne at least 2 to 3 weeks before the orientation week starts. This way you have time to move into your appartement, settle all formalities in Cologne and collect your MultiCa before the lectures start. Should you have a lease with the Kölner Studierendenwerk (KStW) please check with them by what date and time check-in is possible (in general the lease starts on the 1st day of the month).

Good to know: Monday, October 3 is a German holiday, thus offices, shops, and the THK will be closed.

Orientation Week + Lecture Start: After you have registered for your classes your study program will start with an orientation week from October 2 to 6 together with all ITMK freshmen and exchange students. The program will be a mixture of online and face-to-face events. Also, we will have a special AEL information session during this week at.....(t.b.d) In September we will post the schedule for the orientation week under Orientation.

Participation in the orientation sessions is compulsory for all new AEL exchange students. Thus, please be sure to make a note of the dates!

The lectures start on Monday October 9, 2023.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you soon in Cologne!
