VR2WEB: Virtual Reality for medium-sized companies in the construction industry 4.0

VR2WEB describes the development of a communication platform based on Virtual Reality (VR) for medium-sized companies in the construction industry 4.0. In the cloud-based VR solution, digitalized building stock, CAD models and linked metadata are merged into the physically accurate context.

Architects, building planners and building contractors discuss their building projects together in the virtual model and not just in front of it. The physical and the digital world are no longer confronting each other but interacting with each other.

Project content

The aim of this research project is to develop the immersive and interactive communication platform "VR2WEB" with the help of an interdisciplinary team of mechatronics engineers, architects and civil engineers.

First of all, the framework conditions, such as file formats or the engine for developing the virtual world, are defined. Based on this detailed concept, modeling guidelines can then be defined, which serve as an assistance for the development of BIM architecture models. Interfaces are to be developed that enable the 3D BIM architecture models to be automatically imported into the engine environment. Subsequently, a cloud platform is created in which the generated virtual world can be loaded.

It is obvious that the gaming industry in particular offers interesting methods and functions that enable online communication in a virtual world between different participants in the real world.
