Poche / St. Karl / Reditum / PassagenPassagen: Poche
Poche – for all the things inside the walls – between social and spiritual spaces: What used to be a space for worship services for a single religious community in churches is now evolving into a place for spiritual diversity and charitable purposes. The Poche project is a semester-long collaboration between KISD Design and Ecology, St. Karl Borromaus, and Reditum. Under the guidance of Professor Katrin Müller-Russo, students at KISD (Cologne International School of Design) designed transformable interiors for churches, from flexible walls to movable benches. The students visited the church during various events and ceremonies, met with parishioners, and gained a deep understanding of different religious practices and social institutions. As part of the course, interior design concepts for the church were developed and designs for flexible interior furnishings were created: movable walls, benches, cabinets, and folding tables. The Poche design accommodates the things that enable diverse and future uses of church spaces. The designs were presented to the St. Karl parish in 7/2023. For Passagen 2024, a focused project group from the original semester-long Poche project continued the design development of the flexible walls and movable benches and presented them during the Passagen exhibition. Models (on a scale of 1:25 and 1:1) and animations of the Poche interior and furniture were exhibited during Passagen 2024. -
Lab Culture / Between the Trees / MAKK / ÖkoRauschBetween the Trees Events Program MAKK: Lab Culture
Lab Culture Design Projects: Collaboration with ÖkoRausch and the Museum of Applied Arts (MAKK). Prof. Katrin Müller-Russo together with students from KISD (Cologne International School of Design) present at the events program of the exhibition "Between the Trees". A tree is part of an underlying ecosystem in which the “Wood Wide Web” consists of a communicating and interacting mycelium network. In “Lab Culture,” a project in the field of design and ecology, materials, processes, and systems resulting from working with organic matter in this ecosystem are examined. Students present their experiments with fungi, cellulose, and particles and their application scenarios, from clothing to products to installations. The presentation of the semester-long project results took place at MAKK on April 2, 2023. -
Nachtmann / Glass Design Competition / Riedel Factories / AmbienteRiedel/Nachtmann: Glass Design Competition
Ten students from the Department of Industrial Design at Pratt Institute traveled to Germany and Austria on an intensive study of the glassware design industry, thanks to a semester-long competition sponsored by Nachtmann, one of the world’s top crystal manufacturers. As part of the contest, students attended Ambiente, the world’s leading tabletop exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany. They also visited three glass-making factories in Germany and Austria owned by Nachtmann and its parent-company, Riedel. Katrin Mueller-Russo, professor in the Department of Industrial Design, co-organized and guided the competition project. Nachtmann went into production with the awarded designs and a licensee agreement put in place with the students, 7/2010.
