Holding the Void. Artistic Practices of Loss in Modern Memory Culture
Works of art and architecture play a central role in the construction of collective memory. Their removal, theft, or destruction can be experienced as a profound rupture in a community's sense of identity. In some cases, an object's symbolic significance only emerges through its loss, as its painful absence or visible traces of destruction call for new interpretations and meanings. Examples include the 9/11 Memorial in New York, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin, and the destroyed bridges in the Ahr Valley. This research project examines artistic and conservational practices that address collective experiences of loss in public space from around 1800 to the present day. Through a series of case studies, it investigates losses closely connected to the ecological and socio-political crises of modernity, whose traces become inscribed in the biographies of objects, transforming buildings and artworks into symbols of collectively experienced trauma. These histories also shape the ways in which physical voids and traces of destruction are negotiated and interpreted. Reconstruction and restoration can serve to conceal experiences of loss. By contrast, artistic and conservation approaches that deliberately preserve the visibility of absence and destruction can function as coping strategies. Alongside the analysis of such practices, the project develops participatory research methods in which members of affected communities act as co-researchers. Through exhibitions and workshop formats, participants collaboratively explore and discuss artistic approaches responding to loss.
