Our topic:

River deltas, with their fertile floodplains and access to the seas, are hotspots of biodiversity, centers of intensive agricultural production, and engines of economic growth. They represent highly complex socio-ecological systems in which the interests of humans and nature often compete. In many deltas around the world, these competing interests have resulted in biodiversity loss and the overexploitation of land and water resources. Furthermore, river deltas are among the regions most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, which are already seriously affecting the livelihoods of the 339 million people who live there.

  • The alumni seminar aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experiences to address the current challenges of land and water management in river deltas around the world.
  • The seminar combines technical knowledge, practical application, and transdisciplinary approaches that integrate academic expertise with real-world stakeholder engagement from public and private sector, government, and local communities.
  • During the field visit to the Nile Delta, participants will discuss land and water management challenges with local actors and explore implemented solutions like e.g., extensive water reuse system designed to address water scarcity.

The seminar will take place online and in Egypt and consists of two phases:

  • Phase 1: October 5-10, 2026 – Online training on „Open Access Data and Tools for Water Resources Assessment”
  • Phase 2: October 20-27, 2026 - one-week presence seminar in Cairo, Egypt, followed by a fieldtrip to the Nile River Delta

The Seminar is organized by the Institute for Natural Resources Technology and Management (ITT), TH Köln – University of Applied Sciences, with financial support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
