Learning Outcomes:
- Types and functions of abstracts
- Characteristics of effective abstracts
- Tips and tricks for surviving the peer review process, and for understanding peer reviews
- Clear and audience-oriented writing in English
- Writing successful abstracts: challenges and strategies
In the academic world, well-written abstracts play an important role in convincing journal editors and conference organisers to accept a paper for review, or to invite a researcher to present at a conference. This workshop is geared at young researchers who want (or have!) to publish in English-medium journals and to present at international conferences.
It helps you to better understand how peer review processes work and what reviewers mean with their comments. In addition, by analysing abstracts from your own field of research and by practicing abstract writing, you take some steps on your way of becoming a more competent and successful writer in your discipline.
The workshop is held in English and comprises individual writing exercises, small group work, plenary discussions, and trainer inputs from writing pedagogy, English didactics, linguistics, and communication sciences. The small group size allows participants to discuss experiences, ask questions and receive feedback both from the trainer and the rest of the group.
Evaluation note: In this workshop an evaluation will take place.
