(406S20) Intercultural Training for Exchange Students

Seminar for TH Köln students, 27. März 2020

Studying the language is vital to integrate into the new culture, but not enough. Intercultural competence is the awareness about cultural dif-ferences, but it moreover involves practical skills like empathic com-munication, tolerance of ambiguity, dealing with different perceptions and self-awareness. This whole package of skills and knowledge is a key to a successful studying time abroad.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Dealing solution oriented with intercultural misunderstandings
  • Understanding the basis of intercultural communication
  • Dealing with and understanding ones own cultural imprinting
  • Dealing constructively with prejudices, stereotypes, different perceptions and cultural rules

Exchange programs – like Erasmus or apprenticeship programs – make it possible for many students to go abroad during their study years. Research and moreover experience shows, that an only language preparation is very important, but surely not enough, for a successful stay abroad.

It is important to have an awareness about cultural differences that goes further than some dos and don´ts. Successfully studying abroad requires a background and practical knowledge about how to behave in intercultural situations. Moreover empathic communication skills are required, tolerance of ambiguity, self-assurance and the ability to deal constructively with different perceptions.

This seminar is for Incoming and Outgoing students from all cultures. It aims to provide hands-on intercultural learning.

We will work with short theoretical input, group work, discussions and case-studies.
